Participants of the Online supervision groups have been sharing the unique value they have gained by being part of this group.

The value of art making as a way of knowing and understanding continues to amaze practitioners. We can often forget it’s power and quality if we don’t engage in it ourselves which is easy enough when we are the ones offering to others in our work. Keep creative and making art for your wellbeing and nourishment.

No in person supervision groups are scheduled for this year, however if you are able to gather a group of practitioners and would like in person  (minimum of 4) sessions at The Creative Continuum in Warrandyte, please let me know by emailing me at info@integratedtraumatherapy.com.au

Look out for PD CPTSD in August

Resources & Readings:

How to Know a Person by David Brooks

I've recently been inspired by the book How to Know a Person by David Brooks, which explores something close to my heart: the power of truly seeing and understanding another person. Brooks contrasts how we typically collect data and study groups objectively, through surveys, statistics, and social sciences, and how this approach can often overlook what makes each individual genuinely unique. Our imagination, creativity, emotions, intuitions, faith, and desires cannot fully be captured by generalised data.

This insight resonates with my experience as an Art Therapist. I experience Art Therapy uniquely valuing the authentic human experience, focusing on personal meaning and individual expression rather than relying on empirical numbers or data. And I believe that unlike data-driven methods, Art Therapy invites individuals to express their innermost worlds in a multidimensional and truthful way, giving space to the nuances and subtleties of human experience. This is something I’ve seen profoundly impact my clients, especially those who have felt unseen or misunderstood within traditional therapeutic and support systems. Many of my NDIS clients, for example, have expressed frustration at feeling reduced to categories or statistics, revealing the critical need for truly personalised understanding.

As Brooks points out, genuinely seeing and understanding another person requires time, attention, and compassion. He reminds us that the ability to truly "see" another lies at the heart of every meaningful human interaction, whether within families, friendships, workplaces, or our broader communities. Yet this deeply personal and creative act of connection remains one of our greatest collective challenges. So many people around us feel invisible, unheard, or misunderstood. I’m not sure there’s ever been a time in history when loneliness has been as widespread as it is today, a sobering reflection of our modern, individualistic society.

In my practice, I see Art Therapy addressing precisely this challenge. By placing authentic human connection at its core, it provides a space where individuals feel genuinely seen, heard, and understood, the qualities essential to healing, growth, and fulfilling relationships.

I highly recommend Brooks’ How to Know a Person for anyone seeking to deepen their connections, improve their relationships, and nurture a sense of belonging. It aligns beautifully with my commitment as an Art Therapist: to see each person deeply, to honour their unique journey, and to create spaces where genuine understanding can flourish.

Warmly,
Tania
